Getting a massage. How often is often enough?

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold their annual golf tournament on a glorious day in late summer - every year! It’s a chance for Bomber players and fans to get together and play a few rounds. A Blue Bomber joins each foursome, so it’s almost a one-on-one opportunity for dedicated followers.

Another important part of this annual day on the greens is the participation of Academy Massage Therapy. “We’re out there to provide on-site massages to everyone who participates,” said Academy Massage owner, Debby MacKenzie. “We bring out our equipment, and our staff ensures that everyone receives a quality therapeutic massage treatment, just as they would at our clinic.”

“It’s a super fun day, and we just love coming out to it,” she added.

After the rounds of golf, the appreciated massages, and the laughter on the course fades away at the end of the day, one might wonder what’s the recommendation on just how often to get a massage.

This is a question which is often posed to Academy Massage staff.

The answer?

“It depends on a number of factors including your physical health and level of stress. However, that being said, there are some guidelines to follow,” explained Debby.

Getting a massage once or twice a year is relaxing and helps calm the nervous system, improves circulation, relieves muscle pain, and helps with pain management. However, even the best massage isn’t a permanent fix.

Here are some aspects to consider when determining how often you should schedule a massage:

- For chronic pain/special situations: we need to discuss your personal circumstances to make an exact determination. To get you feeling better, you might need to come weekly, or even twice a week. Call Academy Massage to discuss the right treatment plan for you.

- Experiencing some muscle tension and stiffness: typically, once every week or two is ideal for keeping your muscle tissue pliable and in good shape. Getting regular massage will loosen your muscles, and relieve tension and stiffness. Setting up a regular schedule of appointments is a good way to ensure that your appointment time, with the massage therapist you prefer, is available for you.

- Feeling good: once a month is the recommended minimum for maintaining the suppleness and pliancy of your muscle tissue. If your start stretching the time period between massages too much, your muscles will revert to their old patterns, especially if you come under stress. Let us help you - continue to feel good!

The key is to listen to your body. If you still aren’t certain, schedule an appointment and when you come in, we can determine the best course to keeping you feeling great!
