Christy Kim

• massage therapist
• reflexologist
• wholistic practitioner

In the health field for more than 18 years, Christy has worked out of Academy Massage Therapy for five years. She has a ready and welcoming smile, asks questions, and, as all of the massage therapists on site do - presents a solution-seeking manner.

“What I like about my job, is helping people feel better,” explained Christy. “I like that when the treatment is over - people are relaxed, their anxiety and pain reduced. And there is a go forward plan in place, if that’s what they would like.”

“I’m continually thinking about my clients, and ways in which I can help them,” she added. “So I’m one of those people who is always taking courses, and going after new certifications - so that I can respond with the best of my ability, to their needs.”

“And during a massage - when I hear that sigh of relief, I know I’m helping that person, and I’m doing my job.”

Christy’s areas of specialty include:

• massage therapy - remedial massage used for contracted muscles, joint issues, poor circulation, stress related pain, or accidents ranging from vehicular to falls, and everything in between.

• reflexology - feet, hands and ears:

FEET

have many reflex zones, and pressure points - manipulating these areas assists in pain relief, improves circulation, reduces body toxins and stress, while balancing the internal organs.

HAND

reflexology is a good choice for people with arthritis, aches, as well as those suffering from repetitive motion injuries or overuse of hand muscles.

EARS

also contain reflex zones that can assist in pain, anxiety and stress reduction along with toxin removal.

• East Indian head massage - originated in India over 1,000 years ago, as part of family grooming, particularly by mothers who wanted to encourage their daughter’s long, lustrous locks. This relaxing treatment focuses on the scalp, neck and shoulders, face and ears - to reduce stress, blood pressure, and restore life balance.

• ear candling - great for wax reduction. Excellent for tinnitus, vertigo, and enhancing mental clarity, as well as focus.

• foot detox - good for toxin removal. This treatment increases energy, reduces joint pain, relieves anxiety, improves circulation and assists with sinus conditions.

• reiki - a relaxation therapy, based on hand techniques which reduce stress, and encourage healing. This balancing treatment assists the body with emotional, mental, spiritual and physical rejuvenation.

• aroma touch therapy massage - this treatment involves eight essential oils - which in concert with soft touch therapy assists in stress reduction, immune boosting, anti-inflammatory control and body balancing.

Sports massages
Who should get them?

Do you have to be a hard core athlete to get a sports massage? No.

The idea behind sports massage is to manipulate the body’s soft tissues, and focus on certain muscle groups, depending upon which sport you’re playing.

This type of massage can help with increased blood flow, improved flexibility, and enhanced athletic performance, sports massage can be used by athletes of all abilities to prepare for, or recover from athletic or sports events.

“Even if you aren’t an athlete, sports massage may help with muscle pain or restricted range of motion,” pointed out Academy Massage Therapy owner, Debby MacKenzie.

“As with any type of massage, the treatment offers a multitude of benefits.”

How does sports massage differ from a regular massage?

In sports massage, the strokes are generally faster than a typical Swedish massage, and may also include compression, pressure point therapy, friction and joint mobilization.

“We recommend that you provide a short description of your concerns, when you book your appointment. And when you come in, before your massage begins, you have a short discussion with your massage therapist,” Debby also said. “Sharing these details, ensure you receive a focused treatment.”

So as the season of recreational, amateur and professional sports begins, and continues through the winter months - listen to your body, and give us a call. Academy Massage is here for you whether you need help with recovery or maintaining muscle suppleness and pliancy.

Getting a massage. How often is often enough?

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold their annual golf tournament on a glorious day in late summer - every year! It’s a chance for Bomber players and fans to get together and play a few rounds. A Blue Bomber joins each foursome, so it’s almost a one-on-one opportunity for dedicated followers.

Another important part of this annual day on the greens is the participation of Academy Massage Therapy. “We’re out there to provide on-site massages to everyone who participates,” said Academy Massage owner, Debby MacKenzie. “We bring out our equipment, and our staff ensures that everyone receives a quality therapeutic massage treatment, just as they would at our clinic.”

“It’s a super fun day, and we just love coming out to it,” she added.

After the rounds of golf, the appreciated massages, and the laughter on the course fades away at the end of the day, one might wonder what’s the recommendation on just how often to get a massage.

This is a question which is often posed to Academy Massage staff.

The answer?

“It depends on a number of factors including your physical health and level of stress. However, that being said, there are some guidelines to follow,” explained Debby.

Getting a massage once or twice a year is relaxing and helps calm the nervous system, improves circulation, relieves muscle pain, and helps with pain management. However, even the best massage isn’t a permanent fix.

Here are some aspects to consider when determining how often you should schedule a massage:

- For chronic pain/special situations: we need to discuss your personal circumstances to make an exact determination. To get you feeling better, you might need to come weekly, or even twice a week. Call Academy Massage to discuss the right treatment plan for you.

- Experiencing some muscle tension and stiffness: typically, once every week or two is ideal for keeping your muscle tissue pliable and in good shape. Getting regular massage will loosen your muscles, and relieve tension and stiffness. Setting up a regular schedule of appointments is a good way to ensure that your appointment time, with the massage therapist you prefer, is available for you.

- Feeling good: once a month is the recommended minimum for maintaining the suppleness and pliancy of your muscle tissue. If your start stretching the time period between massages too much, your muscles will revert to their old patterns, especially if you come under stress. Let us help you - continue to feel good!

The key is to listen to your body. If you still aren’t certain, schedule an appointment and when you come in, we can determine the best course to keeping you feeling great!

New words and waters, for a new season

September, is often seen as the month of new beginnings. There’s school starting, courses to sign up for, and the leaves changing colour. For many, the new season also means it’s the time to think things through again, or even consider new directions.

Words to live by

WHO you are is what makes you special. Do not change for anyone.
WHAT lies ahead will always for a mystery. Do not be afraid to explore.
WHEN life pushes you over, you push back harder.
WHERE there are choices to make, make the one you won’t regret.
WHY things happen, will never be certain. Take it in stride and move forward.

Refreshing water choices provide a lift to your spirit, as well as your body. Keeping hydrated is an important part of staying healthy. Water promotes cardiovascular health, maintains the body temperature, helps muscles and joints work better, and keeps skin supple.

Also remember to drink plenty of water, particularly after your massage! Drinking lots of water at this time will help flush out the toxins released during your massage, and rehydrate your muscles.

Here’s two simple and tasty recipes that promote hydration. Both recipes focus on berries, which thankfully are plentiful in the stores, and often on still on sale.

Very Berry Water

Ingredients:
1 cup raspberries
1 cup blueberries
1 cup black berries
water

Instructions:
add all the ingredients to a pitcher
stir
chill in the fridge 4 to 6 hours to infuse the flavours

Enjoy!

Kiwi Raspberry Rave

Ingredients:
2 kiwis
1 cup raspberries
water

Instructions:
peel off the kiwi skin
cut the kiwis into slices
add all the ingredients to a pitcher
stir
chill in the fridge 4 to 6 hours to infuse the flavours

Aaahh!
